Q. Why Industrial Ethernet?
A The fieldbuses available on the market use different types of physical transmission; as a result bus-specific infrastructure components are necessary and the interface to the higher level networks requires so-called “gateways”.
Ethernet offers a dramatic increase in bandwidth compared to fieldbuses (e.g. Profibus DP up to 12Mbit/s – Ethernet up to 10Gigabit/s).
Ethernet makes vertical integration possible (From ERP down to the station controller). Ethernet is an open protocol.

Q. Why is Industrial Ethernet better than Office Ethernet?
A. Through functionally Industrial Ethernet and Office Ethernet are the same and they can be used interchangeably, there are major differences between the two. The differences are in the following categories in order of importance:

  Environmental Factor: Industrial Switch are rated for higher Temperature range (00 C to 600 C or -400 to 850 C), higher Vibration & Shock. Their Electromagnetic Interference & Electromagnetic Compatibility specifications are better. They also come with conformal coating, for corrosive atmosphere. Overall, they are designed to tolerate the harsh environment better.

  MTBF & Redundancy Features: Industry cannot tolerate faults, as a shut down can result in heavy loss. Industrial Switches are normally designed without a fan or other moving parts. This and the rugged design factors result in their having a very high MTBF. Coupled with built in Redundancy features like Redundancy Power Supply, Hyper Ring Topology, etc, they result in high availability networks.
   
  Form Factor: Normally, Industrial Switches are designed as Din Rail Mounting and they accept 24VDC power supply, so that it can be mounted alongside other Controllers in Panel, sharing the same power supply.
   
  Life Cycle of Components: While Office Operation life cycle is quite small & new products keep replacing the earlier models, the life cycle of an Industrial Product expected to be about 10 years, so that the network can be maintained for many years.
   
  Security Features: You wouldn’t want someone to play mischief in your plant, as the costs of shutdowns are very high. For this, Managed Industrial Switches have a variety of features:
